What is curating Visibility?

Accentuate creates and delivers projects that break new ground for deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people in the cultural sector. Most recently we have specialised in working with museums, galleries, digital practitioners and academics, always looking to foreground the unique perspectives of deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people, seeing them as vital contributors to our rich cultural ecology.  Accentuate is one of Screen South’s portfolio of programmes. Screen South is a Folkestone based cultural development agency, with digital creativity at its heart.

We have been awarded an Arts Council England grant to deliver the landmark project Curating Visibility. Curating Visibility follows the acclaimed Curating for Change programme and will continue to tackle the serious under-representation of deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people in museum workforces, collections, interpretation and audiences, through 6 Curatorial Fellowships for deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people at Partner Museums across England (as listed above). Fellows are gaining the experience they need to kick start or progress their Curatorial careers, ensuring that those with lived experience of disability are at the heart of museum research and interpretation. Fellows are also starting to work with local communities to research hidden disability history stories and share these through highly accessible public-facing interventions which have a strong digital focus.  We would like our film maker/editor to help us gather the evidence and reflections of key participants in the programme (Fellows, Co-producers and key members of our partner museum teams), tracking the progress of the project and the journey of those participating in it. This will also create both a digital audio-visual legacy of the project and a way of communicating our work to as wide an audience as possible.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a filmmaker/editor with solid experience of capturing live events and workshops. We will need you to film some co-production workshops, documenting the process for creating the final digital interventions, as well as launch events, which will include speeches and some to-camera interviews with key stakeholders, so experience of interviewing will be key.

As several of our stakeholders are deaf, disabled and neurodivergent, experience of working with disabled people will be valuable.

We are also looking for a filmmaker and editor with solid experience of adding access elements to film works, including:

  • Captions
  • Audio description
  • BSL in-vision

Given the focus of our programmes, and the fact that Accentuate is disabled-led, we are especially interested in filmmakers/editors who are themselves deaf, disabled, or neurodivergent. We will discuss any access requirements you have.

We expect the filmmaker/editor to be required for the following (although there may be more events to capture):

  • Several co-production sessions, involving small groups of people meeting at the partner museums.
  • 6 x launch events, which are usually in the evening though they will likely be needed to capture footage during the day as well, held at the six museums listed above.

Please read the brief for the full requirement details.
