Recruitment: Digital Producer – Charleston

Call for Proposals:
Digital Installation Commission at Charleston

Application Deadline: Wednesday 11 February 12pm

Interviews: 25th February

Curating Visibility, delivered by Screen South’s Accentuate Programme, is inviting designers and makers to submit proposals for a new temporary digital installation at Charleston in Firle, East Sussex.

This commission forms part of Curating Visibility, a national fellowship programme addressing the under-representation of deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people across museums, collections, interpretation and audiences.

The selected designer or maker will work closely with the Curating Visibility Fellow at Charleston, alongside the Mad Heritage Collective, to realise an accessible, interactive digital installation that explores historic and contemporary experiences of madness connected to the house and its collections.

About the commission

The installation will centre around a dining table experience, using physical fragments of an illustrated dinner service which visitors can move and arrange. These interactions will trigger audio and animated text, including poetry, sound compositions and illustrations developed by the Fellow in collaboration with the Mad Heritage Collective and commissioned artists.

The work will invite visitors to explore shifting understandings of madness across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and to reflect on whose experiences are valued, celebrated or marginalised.

Accessibility is fundamental to this commission. The installation must demonstrate best practice in accessible digital design and enable visitors to choose how and what they engage with, including advance information about potentially distressing content.
