The Screen Ashford Short Film Competition is an exciting new talent development scheme that will offer four commissioning opportunities for Kent-based Filmmakers to make creatively driven short films in and around Ashford.

What's on offer?
- 4 Short Film Commission at £3,000 each
- Applications open to Filmmakers based in Kent
- Films are expected to be around 3 mins long and must be shot in the Ashford area.
- Films should be story driven and may be on any theme or style.
- Each film will have development and production support from Screen South.
- Each Filmmaker will have an Exec Producer to support them.
Who can apply?
We are looking for Ashford and Kent-based talent with strong creative ideas and a drive to create and deliver their commissions. We welcome proposals from Filmmakers of all backgrounds, particularly those who those who are currently underrepresented in the screen industries. You must be over 18 and live or work in Kent. Your proposed Film must be shot in the Ashford area (please refer to the map on the right).
What ideas are we looking for?
We’re open to creative and thought-provoking ideas for new works that are fresh and innovative proposals for short films. Tonally, they can be serious, comedic, absurd, challenging, provocative, abstract or polemic. All films must be shot in and around Ashford in Kent.
We’re looking for creative filmmakers to push creative boundaries that will provide memorable and compelling viewing for audiences. For more information, please ensure you have read our Creative Brief here.
How do I apply?
- Submit your application via the Jotform link:
- Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a development day with Screen South and the Exec Producers. They will then be given 10 days to re-submit their developed proposals, from which the final 4 will be commissioned following final shortlist interviews.
- Each commissioned filmmaker will receive £3000 production cash, professional mentoring and support to produce their short film.
- Please indicate that you can make the film on the budget available. If you do not have a Producer on board, please let us know what resources and locations you may have access to and where you will need support.
- Filmmakers must be based in Ashford or Kent .
