Ignition Random Acts SPARK 2017 - now openIgnition Random Acts SPARK 2017 - now open

News release 12/04/2017

After a very successful 2 years and 48 short films later, the Ignition Random Acts Network is delighted to announce that the next round of calls for submission is once again open with the first Deadline as:

5pm on April 24th 2017

Screen South is the leading Ignition Random Acts Network Centre for the South East and is working in partnership with the Arts Council, Channel 4 Random Acts, the Ignition Network and Fly Film to deliver an exciting opportunity for 16 – 24 year old emerging, creative artists and filmmakers.

The Ignition Random Acts Network will be providing training, development, production support and budgets of up to £4000 for the selected films; which are to be of a maximum length of 3 minutes excluding credits. All selected films will be considered by Channel 4 for online and broadcast opportunities across their First Act strand of their Random Acts series.

The brief is for ‘bold, innovative expressions of creativity’ across a range of art forms.  We are looking for young people with strong creative ideas, dedication to their craft and drive to create and deliver their film.  We want to hear new voices and see visual storytelling that is exciting and memorable, using diverse art forms such as dance, comedy, spoken word, poetry, digital arts and performance.

The Ignition Random Acts Network alumni may also get the opportunity to see their films distributed more widely and take part in a wealth of Alumni creative and business development opportunities to assist with their future career progression.

There are 2 Commissioning strands:

SPARK for Individual projects supported by an organisation

  • FUSE for organisations as part of a wider programme of work

SPARK - up to 12 Films:

Artist & Filmmaker Led

This is an opportunity for young creative’s to either work with the Ignition Network production partners, who can provide guidance and support to deliver broadcast standard short films, or the young creative’s can nominate their own production partner.  We are able to support young creative’s that may have a great idea with clear potential to deliver their film by October 2017. We can also support artist filmmakers who would like to embed an idea in an activity, company or need a longer development time for creative, technical or access reasons. We have a provisional schedule to commission and deliver 8 films for this strand to be delivered in October, but are very happy to discuss workflow and schedules and defer delivery until later if appropriate. Please refer to the SPARK guidelines for more information which can be found online at

FUSE- up to 6 Films:

Organisation Led

This strand is aimed towards organisations that are planning to run workshop programmes for young creative’s that has an opportunity to embed a broadcast level film strand alongside it. We envisage the films being developed through these creative workshops and the selection decisions being shared between the organisation and Ignition Network following on through a scheduled development period.  We are very open to working with a wide range of art forms and are not prescriptive regarding the workshop structure. Ideally the workshop programme would run over the summer (2017) but if you have a good idea and would welcome a more flexible schedule please talk to Jo Nolan or Nina Somers, as we would like to try to be as flexible as possible. Please refer to the FUSE guidelines for more information which can be found online at

All of the teams selected for commission in the above strands will work with an Executive Producer from Fly Film and experience post production at the highest level thanks to our partnership with Molinare. During their time at the post production house, all teams will complete their production experience by working alongside their in house creative’s in a Grade, Online and Mixing Dub.

We are planning a series of workshops and talks over the next 5 weeks. If you would like to host a workshop or talk, we would welcome a discussion with you to see how we might be able to grow the current network and reach more young creative’s in need of a platform for their talent.

The flyer attached below gives full details on how to apply or you can go straight to the Screen South Website I would be very grateful if you could distribute this to all of your young Artists, Filmmakers and associates.

If you would like to include details of the Ignition Random Acts opportunity on your website – please contact us at and we will provide the various elements required to do so – photos, text and forms.

Thank you for your support, we very much look forward to working with you soon. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

Kind regards,

Jo Nolan
