Kent BFI Film Academy

Are you 16-19? Passionate about film? Want a career in the film industry? If so, the Kent BFI Film Academy is for you.

The British Film Institute (BFI), Screen South and Maidstone Studios have come together once again to create a life changing opportunity and are looking for 20 young people with a passion for filmmaking and great ideas for short films to take part in the Kent BFI Film Academy.

  • Meet high end film professionals, such as Directors, Writers & Producers.
  • Link in with organisations such as BAFTA and the BFI.
  • Develop your filmmaking skills by making a short film with the support of industry professionals.
  • Opportunity to apply for National Residential Academies in Documentary, Animation, Visual Effects & BAFTA mentoring, which are only available to BFI Alumni, at the National Film School

Once you have completed the Network course, you will become part of the growing BFI Film Academy alumni network with access to events such as BAFTA career talks. Who can apply to the BFI Academy?

The Kent BFI Film Academy is open to young people who:

Will be aged 16-19 years old on 23rd October 2021

Live in Kent and are a UK resident Not currently enrolled at university or at university when the course starts

Have not previously taken part on a BFI Academy course

How much does it cost?

The course costs £25 however, if you are unable to pay the full course fee, don’t let this discourage you from applying. Contact us at info@screensouth.org, as costs may be waived.

Bursaries for travel and childcare are also available if you require assistance with these costs.
We welcome applications from all.

When does it take place?

The course will run across 13 days
between October 2021 - January 2022

There will be an additional date for a production call – date TBC 1st November-12th November.

Where does it take place?

The Kent BFI Film Academy is a split between in person and online, with most sessions happening in Folkestone, and a couple of the sessions taking place in Maidstone.

The timings for the course days is normally 10am – 5pm, but this does not include travel time to/from the session.

 Please note that the course dates, locations and format are all subject to change and will also be in line with the COVID-19 Government guidelines in place in October 2021.
