Stored Out of Sight:
Hidden History of Disabled People
16 sept 2023 - 16 dec 2023 • hastings museum & art gallery
Disabled people have always been part of history, but their stories have often been in the background. This exhibition, curated by Jack Guy, Curating for Change Fellow, and co-produced by seven people who are d/Deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent, explores objects hidden in the store that relate to Hastings’ disability past. Through these stories and those of contemporary activism, the exhibition highlights the social and environmental barriers that restrict people daily.
Curating for Change is a ground-breaking project launched in 2022 which exists to create strong career pathways for d/Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent curators, who are currently seriously under-represented in museums, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Art Fund. Curating for Change is being delivered through Screen South’s Accentuate Programme. Accentuate designs and delivers landmark projects for disabled people to participate and lead within the cultural sector.
