Unfolding Worlds Artists Call Out

Unfolding Worlds is a creative XR Lab led by Screen South and presented with Folkestone Fringe and Tinkr Academy exploring game engines as a tool for visioning possible futures. Can the interactive and fabricated landscapes of video games creative tech be retooled as a poetic and critical medium to reflect on our environment?

Taking inspiration from landmark contemporary art commissions to be unveiled as part of Folkestone Triennial 2025, this three-month Lab invites a cohort of emerging artists to develop creative skills using the UNREAL engine, and create a new work, building towards a showcase exhibition presented as part of Folkestone Fringe and framed by the theme (Un)Imagined Futures.

Based out of the Screen South Digital Hub in Folkestone, participants will take part in a series of workshops and receive studio access and mentoring over a three-month development period. Final works may take the form of screen-based pieces, installations, or projections.

Enrolment on Unfolding Worlds is free and open to emerging artists in the South East of England (excluding London) looking to develop their practice in simulation, virtual environments and real-time media. No prior experience with game engines is required.
